Antonin Comestaz | For All We Know
“Nederlands Dans Theater and Korzo present an ode to permanent creativity”
On the first day, God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. But God waited until the third day to make the sun. So what lit up the earth on the first two days? When the outside temperature is zero and it is expected to be twice as cold tomorrow, how cold will it get? When a fly lands on the ceiling, at what point is it upside down? And where does all the white go when the snow melts? These are childlike and poetic questions to which Antonin Comestaz, in For All We Know, does not want to give any answers at all. The playful, absurdist tone and incredible movement inventiveness give the work of this French choreographer, who is based in the Netherlands, an entirely unique charm. Behind the captivating lightness lies the seriousness and authentic drive of a versatile maker of whom we will hear a lot more. After winning the BNG Bank Dance Award in 2018, the annual performance by Nederlands Dans Theater and Korzo gives him the opportunity to take an important step in his development.
Antonin Comestaz (France, 1980) graduated from the Paris Opera Ballet School in 1999 and then danced with Paris Opera Ballet, The Hamburg Ballet, Tanz Theater München, Ballet Mainz and Scapino Ballet Rotterdam. Since 2013, Antonin has focused on developing his own work as a freelance choreographer, with a breakthrough in his cross-genre work Out of the grey by Korzo. Antonin’s work often reveals itself in absurd and dark comic expressions of everyday life and mankind. He has already received several awards and nominations for his playful, idiosyncratic and highly committed choreographic style. His work is regularly shown at various international festivals.
