“Boons has the power to keep you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. Not in the least because of the ruthless, almost maniacal approach that's also very detailed and expressive – Trouw ”

The effect of our ability to adapt
The Flemish Astrid Boons made a name for herself in our country as a – beautiful – dancer of Dansgroep Krisztina de Châtel, Dansgroep Amsterdam and Nederlands Dans Theater 2. A collaboration with Japanese choreographer Saburo Teshigawara, at the GöteborgsOperans Danskompani, gave dance a new, even richer meaning for her, and slowly Boons started to create for herself. Back in the Netherlands in 2016, she created the duet Rhizoma for the program for young talent Here we live and now – a collaboration between Korzo and Nederlands Dans Theater – which immediately resulted in the BNG Bankprijs. A year later, she received the Piket Kunstprijs (The Hague) and in 2020 NRC Handelsblad named her as one of the great, ‘indispensable’ choreographic talents of our time.

Despite being a modest person with a deliberate way of working, Boons makes radical choices in her choreographies. After the successful Fields (2019) – in which she chooses “a daring, almost monomaniac approach”, according to NRC – she launches her second full-length production during this festival: Do you believe me yet? In it, the choreographer makes a connection between how our body stores unprocessed traumas through dissociation and our virtual self in the digital era. In both situations, a pseudo persona is created, an incomplete version of our selves. In a play with reality, Boons and her dancers explore who we really are and what the effect is of our ‘ability to adapt’ depending on the social situation we find ourselves in.

Empathic power
Transformation is at the center of the work of Boons. In her creations, movement is a continuously slow-transforming form of energy. The choreographer asks herself existential questions about the forward movement of humankind and attacks these physically and mentally. Do you believe me yet? is a performance that gets under your skin, taps into our empathic power, and asks for deep concentration on the part of both the performer and the audience.

“Arise by Astrid Boons was recorded without any camera tricks. The simple, front-facing whole showed how three dancers tried to rise up to the sweltering soundscape of  Miguelangel Clerc Parada while they fought with a rhythmic pulse that brought their bodies to severe shocks from within. So enthralling that you forgot the modest intermediary of the camera” – De Groene Amsterdammer about Boons’ previous choreography that was only available online due to corona restrictions
