DanceAble 2015 | Openingsvoorstelling: ILL-Abilities & Mixed Doubles
“Two world premieres: ILL-Abilities & Mixed Doubles”
The opening program on Friday November 27th in Theater aan het Spui consists of two world premieres: a show by the international breakdance sensation ILL-Abilities and two new duets.
Two choreographers were invited by Holland Dance to work on a ‘Mixed Double duet’. Whereby a passionate dancer with a disability works together with a physically ‘able’ dancer. The duets draw the viewer into a fascinating encounter. Fang-Yu Shen who resides in Germany has a unique dance idiom and is choreographer in residence at Scapino Ballet Rotterdam. It is here that she first experienced inclusion dance as an art form with social importance. Mixed Doubles represents for her the chance to take inclusion dance to the next level with the help of two experienced dancers Nele Deckx and Sonja Parmentier. Min Hee Bervoets is known in the Netherlands from the television shows ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ and ‘The Ultimate Dance Battle’. Together with her dancers Genevieve van Quaquebeke and Marie Limet she steps outside the comfort zone. The result is a choreography that we have not seen before and which puts the personalities of the dancers center stage.
ILL-Abilities & Lloyd Marengo
ILL-Abilities is an international breakdance crew that consists of ‘ differently-abled’ dancers. The group has been active since 2007. At first just in the bboy competition circuit, but quickly also outside of that. It was an initiative of dancer and motivational speaker Luca ‘Lazylegz’ Patuella from Montreal. Together with Redouan ‘Redo’ Ait Chitt (Nederland), Sergio ‘Checho’ Carvajal (Chili), Tommy ‘Guns’ Ly (VS) and Jacob ‘Kujo’ Lyons (VS) he now tours Northern America, Europe and Asia with productions and workshops. The group is a model of positive thinking: everyone has the power to inspire, you just have to focus on potential. Hence their motto: ‘no excuses, no limits.’ For DanceAble they collaborate with breakdance expert Lloyd Marengo.
If there is one specific discipline that is associated with a body that functions physically perfect, then it has to be dance. We at Holland Dance think it is time to question this traditional stance. For the first time in the Netherlands a space will be created for integrated dance with a unique event called DanceAble.
