Peggy Baker Dance Projects
“Peggy is a true dance bohemian: she knows how to play up against contemporary orthodoxy and turn it on its head. It’s why she is a great artist… There is always method in what she does, but what she does is always unexpected and always a joy to watch…”
– Mikhail Baryshnikov
Acclaimed Canadian contemporary dance artist Peggy Baker joins forces with violinist Sarah Neufeld and drummer Jeremy Gara, members of Grammy award-winning Canadian band Arcade Fire, to reveal the splendours and complexities of the human soul. In a series of contrasting tableaux, who we are in the dark probes the secrets that hide in the shadows. Video projections, lighting effects, and paintings by visual artist John Heward shape the space. Music and movement meet and collide, gripping, fragile, touching. Between agitation and serenity, chaos and calm, volatile emotional states transfigure the movement and the space. A vibrant deep dive to the heart of the night, charged with the promise of dawn. who we are in the dark explores the mysteries of darkness in order to let in the light.
Peggy Baker is one of Canada’s most celebrated and influential dance artists, acclaimed as a performer in the work of esteemed Canadian and American choreographers, and as a choreographer of poetic and visually striking works for stage, galleries, intimate venues, and public spaces. She is Artist-in-Residence at Canada’s National Ballet School and a fellow of the Bogliasco Foundation, Italy. Her unique abilities are the product of an education in both dance and theatre, pursued initially through the drama department of the University of Alberta, with The School of Toronto Dance Theatre, and in New York at the Martha Graham School and the Herbert Berghof Studio.
