“The Rite of Spring, exactly the same choreography that Pina Bausch premiered in 1976, seemed more tragic and spectacular, more thrilling and perhaps also, favourably, more out of control - EL PAÍS”
Amare and Holland Dance Festival present the iconic program: The Rite of Spring in the celebrated choreography of Pina Bausch and the duet common ground[s] created and danced by Germaine Acogny and Malou Airaudo. This production is a collaboration of Pina Bausch Foundation, École des Sables and Sadler’s Wells. After London, Paris and Canada, this high-profile performance comes to The Hague where it can be seen exclusively from Thursday, January 12 to Sunday, January 15.
Stravinsky’s masterpiece, an emblem of modernity, has inspired generations of contemporary choreographers with its extraordinary earthy power. This “great pagan sacred ritual,” in the words of the composer himself, is a milestone in the work of Pina Bausch. For several months, a team of dancers from the Tanztheater Wuppertal at the École des Sables in Senegal, relived and shared the essence of the Rite choreographed by Bausch in 1975 with 36 performers from 14 African countries. On the earth-covered stage, male and female dancers clash and engage in a wild and poetic struggle that culminates in the sacrifice of the ‘Chosen One.’
To open the evening, common ground[s] witness the meeting between Germaine Acogny, first lady of contemporary African dance and founder of the École des Sables, and Malou Airaudo, an icon of the first hour of Tanztheater Wuppertal. The fates of two women and two dance traditions intertwine in a sensitive and moving duet that reflects their connection and rich respective histories.
This cast, a tight community assembled from scratch, is immersed in both wrenchingly abstracted and realistic movement.
★★★★ THE GUARDIAN
As the community of dancers build to a climax, a sense of foreboding in the air, the combination of grace and visceral fury in their movement is electrifying.
★★★★ THE TIMES
“It’s both real and a work of incredibly structured dance, and here the dancers endow it with deep humanity and supreme skill.”
