No VAT increase on culture, sports and books!
17 April 2025

The proposed increase in VAT from 9% to 21% on culture, sport, art, media and books will definitely not go ahead. The plan, which was intended to generate additional tax revenue, has been taken off the table due to its significant social and economic impact.
According to critics, an increase in the low VAT rate would significantly raise the threshold for participation in cultural and sporting activities. Millions of Dutch citizens would be affected, with negative consequences for accessibility, creativity and health. In addition, the earning power of some 500,000 people working in these sectors would come under pressure.
The plans have recently caused considerable unrest within the sector. Artists, athletes, writers and fans made their voices heard en masse. Several initiatives have been launched under the banner #nohogerbtw, including the search for 'Cultuuroptimists' by the platform WeArePublic and other social actions highlighting the importance of arts and culture.
For the time being, calm seems to have returned to the sector with the decision to permanently abolish the VAT increase. The low VAT rates will be maintained, ensuring the accessibility of culture, sport and reading.
