After years of absence in dance city The Hague, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker's Rosas is finally back in town on Amare's dance stage in a unique rendition of “The Goldberg Variations” in which she dances herself.
Bach's musical komos
The Goldberg Variations are among Bach's late works, in which the composer explored the possibilities of musical themes to the extreme in a play of variations, canons and fugues. For this composition, he started from a simple, subdued melody and an underlying bass line, on the basis of which a musical cosmos unfolds that shines with extraordinary versatility and an unparalleled level of complexity.
Solo performance
Together with pianist Alain Franco, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker continues her trajectory with Bach in a dialogue with these variations. She is reducing the large ensemble of The Six Brandenburg Concertos, the previous creation set to music by Bach, to a solo performance which she dances herself. In doing so, she remains true to the same principle of the musical score as the blueprint for choreography.
Enduring search for her own dance language
With one aria and thirty variations, the music challenges the dance to the same exercise: finding a form in constant change, while retaining an unchanging core. For De Keersmaeker, it means an invitation to bring together the road travelled and the questions of today in the ongoing search for her own dance language
