Hans van Manen (1932–2025) – A Master of Dance

17 December 2025

With great sadness, Holland Dance Festival has learned of the passing of former ballet dancer and choreographer Hans van Manen, at the age of 93.

Hans van Manen is internationally regarded as one of the great masters of contemporary ballet. His work is celebrated for its clarity of form, musical precision, and timeless expressive power. He was often referred to as the “Mondrian of dance”: his choreographies are abstract, incisive, and at the same time deeply human.

Over the course of his remarkable career, Van Manen created more than 150 ballets, performed by over ninety companies worldwide. His influence on generations of dancers, choreographers, and dance lovers is undeniable and enduring.

Hans van Manen was a member of the Committee of Recommendation of Holland Dance Festival and held the festival close to his heart. We cherish the many beautiful memories of him and his involvement, and we will deeply miss his vision, sharp eye, and passion for dance.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to his loved ones, friends, and colleagues as they mourn this great loss.
