Savoring the Masterpieces of Jiří Kylián
2 July 2025

We are still savoring the memories of four memorable performances of Wings of Time, the impressive retrospective showcasing the extraordinary oeuvre of master choreographer Jiří Kylián. From June 18 to 22, the dancers of the Norwegian National Ballet and the seven Kylián ballets were greeted with sold-out audiences, thunderous applause, standing ovations, and a palpable emotional response from the crowd. After decades of worldwide acclaim, his work returned to the place where his artistic vision fully blossomed. The retrospective could hardly have had a more fitting finale than in the city where he created so many of his iconic ballets.
Wings of Time brought together highlights from Jiří Kylián’s rich oeuvre in a poetic journey through time, memory, and movement. It offered a unique opportunity to (re)discover and experience the work of one of the greatest choreographers of our time. With over 100 choreographies to his name, Kylián is considered an absolute pinnacle in the dance world. Through his ballets, he revitalized the genre—moving beyond narrative structures yet imbued with poetry, imagination, and profound musicality. His work breathes innovation and refinement, enriching and renewing the art form in an unparalleled manner.
Divided into two programs, Day after Yesterday and Day before Tomorrow, the virtuosic dancers of the Norwegian National Ballet brought Kylián’s creations to life with unmatched intensity, craftsmanship, and complete dedication. The audience was carried along by the deep emotions and powerful expression characteristic of his work.
In addition to the performances, masterclasses for young and old offered a special chance to engage directly with fragments from Kylián’s repertoire, guided by an instructor who deeply understands and lives his oeuvre. Youths aged 12 to 17 could participate free of charge in the CHAPEAU masterclass, gaining insight into the intent behind the movements through dance and background information. A diverse group of adults worked with Bella Figura, each physically and artistically challenged.
The visual experience was further enriched on performance days by a photo exhibition tracing an impressive journey through Kylián’s artistic career. This exhibition, made possible thanks to the Nederlands Dans Theater, was a worthy tribute to his inspiring vision and to The Hague as an important center for contemporary dance.
A particularly special moment was the presence of Princess Beatrix on Thursday, June 19. She attended the first part of the retrospective, Day after Yesterday, featuring works such as Forgotten Land, No More Play, Petite Mort, and Symphony of Psalms. The evening concluded festively with a photo opportunity and warm expressions of appreciation from the princess for Kylián’s artistic legacy—a beautiful tribute to a visionary who has enriched dance worldwide and continues to inspire generations.
Among many highlights of the retrospective was the interview with Jiří Kylián himself. In conversation with Samuel Wuersten and Ingrid Lorentzen, Kylián candidly shared his artistic vision, sources of inspiration, and personal experiences. He reflected on his career, his connections with The Hague and Oslo, and spoke about the deeper meaning of dance. This intimate discussion provided a rare and personal glimpse into the man behind the choreographer.
Kylián’s retrospective Wings of Time has impressively honored his artistic legacy and left a lasting impression on all who were fortunate enough to attend this special series of performances. With passion and mastery, it brought themes of time, memory, and movement vividly to life. A meaningful moment for international contemporary dance, one that will resonate with everyone present for a long time to come.
This special two-part Kylián Retrospective was presented by Holland Dance Festival, Amare, and Kylián Productions, made possible by the Fonds Internationale Dans (FIND). Through the International Dance Fund (FIND), Amare, Holland Dance Festival, and Nederlands Dans Theater join forces with the aim of bringing high-profile international dance productions to the Netherlands and positioning The Hague as the country’s premier city of dance.
